Parts of a model rocket

The 3 main parts of a model rocket airframe are:

  • Nose cone
  • Body tube
  • Fins

Nose cone:

It is the leading part of the model rocket, which faces the majority of the aerodynamic forces. It is generally cone or ogive shaped for higher efficiency trajectory through the atmosphere.

It generally contains the avionics and other payload in launch vehicles.

Body tube:

The body tube is a cylinder, making up the rocket body. In the model rocket, the body tube contains avionics and recovery system. The end of the body tube generally contains the engine mount/ motor mount.

Fins:

The fins are the directional components of the model rocket, as well as big launch vehicles. These give direction to the model rocket by preventing it from spinning during its trajectory.

Fins for model rockets are made up of balsa, cardboard or foam sheet.
